NUNTON
STEADINGS

Built way back in the 1700s, the beautifully historic Nunton Steadings building is the place we call home. Situated in Benbecula, right at the heart of island life, it’s where we proudly bring Whisky production back to our islands.

We’re delighted to be able to welcome visitors to our friendly little distillery shop at Nunton Steadings. Situated right in the centre of our new home you’ll find a warm island welcome with lots of Downpour gin based treats in store. Join us for a tasting or select some goodies to take away. Whatever you fancy it really would be rather nice to see some of you soon.

Our opening hours vary throughout the year, so ring ahead to check.

A NEW FUTURE FOR OUR HISTORIC HOME

Inspired by the past, we’re looking to the future as we ready our 18th century building for the exciting journey ahead. As we look to bring new employment and industry to our home we’re starting the work to transform Nunton Steadings into a new distillery & visitor centre as we bring whisky back to our islands. Take a look at what we have in store.

THE BELL WILL RING AGAIN

The bell at Nunton was an important signifier of island events. Ringing out for all to hear when something of note happened. The original bell was last rung at the dawn of the new millennium and has remained in careful storage since, awaiting the ideal time to awaken again. And so it is, that we plan this bell will ring again when the first drop of Nunton Whisky is drunk from our steadings building. A fitting way to mark the start of Whisky returning to our islands

A RATHER INTERESTING HISTORY

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘if these walls could talk…’ and in our case it’s something we think about a lot. Dating back to the 1700s our Nunton Steadings has a lot of history, home to many adventures! Here’s just some of the sights our distillery building has seen over the years…

THE NUNNERY

The site where our building sits was originally home to a nunnery way way back in the 1300’s. A long time ago, but some might say that if you sit in silence you could hear some ghostly prayer drafting through the air.

A ROYAL ESCAPE

Legend has it that none other than Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape was planned from here at Nunton in the aftermath of the Jacobites’ defeat at Culloden. That’s some impressive company to keep, and if he turned up today we’d be sure to get the kettle on.

MOOOO

Thinking of occupants from times past, we are reminded that Nunton Steadings used to be used as a place to store cattle, sheltered safe & sound from the island elements. Don’t worry, they have since mooooved on (sorry)!

WEDDING BELLS

A very many happy couples have celebrated their special day at Nunton, with our distillery home providing the space for newlyweds throughout the years to make a toast to future times and dance the night away with friends and family.

COFFIN MAKERS

Our building has been the setting for births & marriages, so it’s perhaps only fitting that it’s had some dealings with death too. The former home of a coffin maker, Nunton has hosted crafts people of a different kind who ensured that when it was time to go you did so in style.

A LITTLE MILL

We like to think we’re keeping the maker spirit alive following on from those who used the building as a mill. We’ll be using island grains for a slightly different purpose, but we hope the mill owners of times past would be happy that the grain will yet again be put to good use.

NUNTON WHISKY

Our whisky journey begins. Join us as we set out to create some of Scotland’s finest single malts from our new distillery home in Nunton Steadings.
